San Valentín or Valentine's Day

Valentine's Day is of course a very American party but that does not take away the fact that on that day you can pamper your loved one or just do something nice with him or her. How about a day trip to one of those romantic places, of which there are so many in Spain. In this article we describe five villages that, at least in Spain, are seen as romantic and beautiful enough to visit. Do you already know these villages?
Valentine's Day does not have to be chocolate, flowers and gifts but it can also be a day where you will do something nice with your loved one. That can be a dinner, a romantic overnight stay or a day trip to one of the villages below. In this article we have made a small selection of 5 romantic villages but there will undoubtedly be more.
Peratallada (Girona, Catalonia)
Our first stop is the interesting village of Peratallada in the province of Girona, in the state of Catalonia in northeastern Spain. This village can be seen as one of the best preserved medieval villages in Spain. The origin of the village dates back to the 10th century AD when a castle was built on this site. It did not take long, however, or around that castle a typical medieval center arose with narrow streets, gates, bridges and arches where you can walk underneath. All this was also built on the rocks so you have a nice view over the area.

Frías (Burgos, Castilla y León)
The village of Frías is seen by many as one of the most beautiful villages in Spain, especially because of the castle which was built high above the village proud of a mountain point. It is one of those villages where time seems to have stood still and you have stepped into a time machine as a visitor. It is also a romantic village to walk through and enjoy the old and narrow streets, beautiful squares and monuments that can be found on every corner.

Cudillero (Asturias)
The colorful village of Cudillero may not be the village that will visit the typical Mediterranean sea since it is located on the other side of Spain in the state of Asturias. Nonetheless, Cudillero is certainly worth a visit to this list as a romantic getaway. The location of the village in a bay and right by the sea, where the colorful houses are built against the rock walls, is great. All houses in the center have different colors which makes it a joyful happening to walk through this village. If the weather also cooperates (it often  is raining) you can sit on a terrace and enjoy the real Spanish life.
Ronda (Málaga, Andalusia)
What do we have to tell about Ronda, (almost) everyone knows this city, because of the majestic bridge that connects the two parts of the city. Given that the city of Ronda is not too far from the Costa del Sol and is even located in the province of Málaga, a visit is more than worth it ,and only 50 kilometers away from the coast. The most striking of Ronda is the Puente Nuevo or the new bridge that was built along the Tajo de Ronda with the Puente Viejo and the Puente Romano.
Binibeca (Menorca, Balearic Islands)
In the summer it is packed full of day trippers and tourists, but in the winter, spring and autumn months, it is pleasant to walk through the village of Binibeca on the Balearic island of Menorca. Menorca is already worth a visit, because of the beautiful beaches and bays but Binibeca is a must. The white colored village lies on a bay and is a village full of narrow streets and alleys, arches and arcades, squares, niches and vistas. It sometimes looks like a whitewashed labyrinth.

Finally, we add our preference of romantic villages / cities.
Pinoso (Alicante, Comunitat Valencia)
For many people this village is unknown, Pinoso is a municipality in the Spanish province of Alicante in the Valencia region.
Pinoso is a beautiful mountain village with several typical small Spanish restaurants and beautiful authentic houses in the village with friendly people.
The Ministry of Agriculture, Environment, Climate Change and Rural Development has called the Municipal Nature Reserve the space "Monte Coto-Pinoso" and established a legal protection system, it has beautiful walking and horse riding routes where people can enjoy a romantic atmosphere.
There are also various Bodegas where you can taste wine from Pinoso & surroundings.
Where is your romantic place in Spain? If you send us your story, we will place it on our website.

The oldest man in the world (113) died in Spain

Francisco Nunez Olivera, the world’s oldest man, has died at his home in Spain – a month after celebrating his 113th birthday.

He passed away around 10.30pm on Monday night.

The mayor of Bienvenida, a village in south-west Spain where he lived his entire life, described it as “a pity for the entire village and the whole world”, reported Spanish newspaper El Periodico.

Mr Olivera, who was born on 13 December 1904, was known locally as “Marchena”, a nickname given to him when a child mistook him for the famous Spanish singer, Pepe Marchena.

The retired farmer reportedly took daily walks alone in his village until he was 107, and started to read again at 98 following an operation to cure his cataracts.
