A 'mini tsunami' floods beaches and ports of Mallorca and Menorca.

MALLORCA - A tidal wave of about 1.5 meters flooded the beaches Monday on holiday island of Mallorca and nearby Menorca.

That is what various foreign media report. The bizarre meteo - tsunami also had consequences for holiday resorts on Mallorca. Bars and terraces on the coast were flooded with seawater and boulevards and roads along the beach are blank. The roads in Alcudia in the north of Mallorca are under water.

The strong current broke the ropes of a historic sailboat in the port of Mallorca. The boat and the crew had to be driven back to the harbor because the boat threatened to drift to the sea, Mirror reports. There were no reports of injuries.

The 'rissaga' - as the weather phenomenon is mentioned in Catalan Spanish. Fortunately, the weather phenomenon occurred when the beaches were largely empty.

Meteo-Tsunami

To emphasize the difference with a real tsunami, we write in the case as we saw on Mallorca about a meteo-tsunami. A meteo-tsunami is a tidal wave generated by weather conditions. They arise mainly due to sudden pressure changes, for example in the event of a severe thunderstorm.
